The Native American Student Award is a grant of up to $1000, intended to help defray the costs of tuition, books, room and board or other expenses for qualifying Native American student(s).
One or more grants of up to $1000 each may be rewarded. The successful recipient(s) will also receive a one-year membership in the Plains Anthropological Society that includes a subscription to the peer-reviewed journal Plains Anthropologist. Separate grants are available to undergraduate and graduate students in Anthropology. Funds will be administered by the winning student's academic department.

Criteria

Nominees must be Native American (includes Métis). For this award, applicants must provide proof of enrolled tribal membership with a federal or state recognized Native American, Hawaiian, or Alaskan tribe or provide documentation of community relationships via letters of recommendation from a tribal official, tribal college professor/administrator, or enrolled tribal members (minimum of two) that demonstrate a community affiliation for the applicant.

Nominees must be full or part-time graduate or undergraduate students in anthropology, archaeology or Native American Studies. Eligible students can receive the award once as an undergraduate and once as a graduate student.

Undergraduate nominees may attend any four-year college or university in either the United States or Canada that provides specific coursework or research covering Great Plains anthropology or Native American Studies. In your letter of interest or application, please include a description of appropriate coursework or research that you have undertaken.

Graduate nominees must be engaged in research that relates to some aspect of the Great Plains, but do not need to be attending a university located on the Great Plains. The research can be broadly applicable or topical as long as there is a defined applicability to Great Plains research topics. For example: Research on ethics topics that may span regional boundaries but is applicable to the Great Plains and other geographic areas.

Submit the following documents to the Native American Student Award Committee Chair(s) by Saturday, September 30th at 11:59 pm CST. Either electronic or written applications are acceptable:

Student’s resume or vita (graduate students) or a list of coursework, past and present (undergraduates)

Letter of recommendation from a faculty member focusing on the student’s accomplishments or potential in the field of anthropology

Photocopy of the student’s tribal enrollment certificate or equivalent certification of tribal membership/enrollment or CDIB
The Committee will select one or more recipients and announce its decision at the Annual Meeting of the Plains Anthropological Society. The Committee will notify the recipient(s) and his or her department following the Annual Meeting. An announcement will also be published in the Plains Anthropologist.
