Donna C. Roper (1947-2015) was an exceptional contributor to the archaeology profession and a dedicated Plains archaeologist. Her research interests ranged from Paleoindian to historic Plains tribes, but she is perhaps best remembered for her many contributions to the Late Prehistoric period peoples of the Central Plains. The Donna C. Roper Research Fund of the Plains Anthropological Society (PAS) was established at her request to provide support for avocational archaeologists, students, and researchers conducting anthropological research pertaining to present day Kansas and Nebraska.
This year, we are pleased to announce that we have $20,000 available for awards. We will accept proposals for any amount up to $10,000 and hope to be able to make several awards.
Awards will be granted annually depending on the amount of investment growth and the quality of submitted proposals. More than one award may be made, and no award will be given if no applications are received or the committee determines the submitted applications do not merit the award.
Who can apply:
Students, faculty, researchers, and avocational archaeologists conducting anthropological research (including ethnographic or biological topics) pertaining directly to the region that is present day Kansas or Nebraska.
The applicant must be a member of the Plains Anthropological Society at the time of application.
The 2021 Application Deadline has passed (October 3, 2021). The 2022 Application Deadline TBA.
The application shall consist of:
• an explanation of the research, not to exceed 2 pages in length (single-spaced, 12 point font),
• a detailed budget,
• a budget justification, and
• a letter of support from an individual familiar with the proposed research. Examples of the latter include a letter from a student's advisor, from the institution where the collections being considered for analysis are curated, or from a colleague.
Submit your application to the committee chair, Mary Adair, at email@example.com. The committee chair will distribute the applications to the committee members for consideration and deliberation.
Recipients will be notified by [2022 date to be determined] with awards also posted to the PAS website.
Awardees are strongly encouraged to present their research at the annual Plains Anthropological Conference and/or in an article or report in the Plains Anthropologist.
Awardees shall provide a summary of the funded project results to the committee chair within a year of the award.
We have $20,000 available for distribution in 2021. We will accept proposals for any amount up to $10,000 and hope to be able to make several awards.
