Each year, the PAS treasurer determines what amount, if any, exists for undergraduate travel funding. PAS travel awards are intended to supplement and support undergraduate attendance at the annual meeting but cannot cover all travel costs. Students should seek additional funding from their department or university, local or state archaeological societies, or other entities to cover the balance of expenses. Budget submissions deemed excessive will receive partial or no funding from PAS. 

 

  1. Eligible Applicants:
    • Students enrolled in an institution of higher education studying to complete a postsecondary degree, typically an associate (two-year) or bachelor's (four-year) degree.

    • Individuals who are not enrolled in a graduate program, but who graduated with an associate's, or bachelor's degree in the 12 months prior to the PAS conference.

       

  2. Undergraduate funding will be limited to the following travel-related expenses:
    • Airline ticket
    • Reasonable fuel estimates
    • Rental car
    • Conference lodging expenses as determined by the PAS Conference Daily Rate
    • Off-site hotel expenses for the duration of the conference, not to exceed the PAS Conference Daily Rate
    • Food stipend approved by the PAS Treasurer and Chair of the Student Engagement Committee

    • Regardless of the validity of claims made by applicants, all student travel awards shall be subject to a monetary cap as determined by the Treasurer and Chair of the Student Engagement Committee.

       

  3. PAS funding for undergraduate travel will not cover:
    • optional conference participation costs
    • conference field trips
    • workshop fees other optional conference offerings.

 

  1. Priority in funding decisions shall be given to undergraduates who meet the following criteria:
    • submit the required form completed by a faculty or professional mentor addressing the student's interest in Great Plains anthropology or in the research specialization of conference attendees, such as shared theoretical, methodological, or temporal interests.
    • submit a paper or poster for presentation at the PAS conference

    • share a hotel room with other student attendees.

       

  2. PAS faculty members or professional mentors are encouraged to organize their students' attendance, especially when group travel and lodging can be arranged. In such cases, PAS faculty members shall submit the Student Travel Grant application listing each student attendee and the proposed budget for the group.

     

  3. Funding awards shall be distributed as a check at the PAS conference registration table. Distribution shall not occur in advance of conference meeting dates. No exceptions.
